We are known for our recitals!

Starlight Music Lessons offers an exceptional recital/concert experience for the student. Although participation is not mandatory, each student is strongly encouraged to perform as our recitals are the highlight of the year and serve to provide motivation for even the most "stage shy" student. We work hard to make them fun and enjoyable, while still providing a formal and professional experience that helps each student with poise, stage presence, motivation for learning and more!

Recitals are held in local auditoriums, with a maximum or 40-50 students per show. We use smaller auditoriums and performance halls/rooms to create an intimate, less-threatening atmosphere for our students and their parents.

We have a big show every spring, usually in May or June. Winter and Summer recitals are held if there is enough student interest in your area. In addition, we combine recitals with community service by offering organized performing opportunities at nursing homes and retirement apartments.

ANSWER TO COMMON QUESTIONS:

WHAT SONG WILL MY CHILD BE PLAYING?

The teacher will pick out a recital piece with your child. Generally, at our Spring recital, the pieces are a bit more difficult than the weekly songs they play, due to the fact that they will be working on the songs for 1-2 months (perhaps even longer for our more advanced students). It is important to tell the teacher as soon as you have registered in order to allow the teacher and student the maximum amount of time to work on their piece.

DO PIECES HAVE TO BE MEMORIZED?

Since this is usually determined based on the individual student, your child’s teacher will help make this decision. It is our policy that if the student is very uncomfortable playing without their sheet music, they should be allowed to use it. It is always better to perform with sheet music than to not perform at all or to attempt to perform a piece memorized when you are insufficiently prepared. A positive experience is our goal, regardless of memorization!

IS MY CHILD READY TO PLAY IN A RECITAL?

They will be if they practice. We strive to make our recitals a positive experience for everyone. Practice and preparation is important. Our goal is for your child to have a positive and encouraging experience, regardless of age or skill level. The teachers will be working with every student to prepare them for the big day. Preparation (practicing) is important to make the student ready. If you prepare, you'll be ready and have a positive experience. While this is not a competition and students of all ages and skill levels will be participating, it is appropriate to prepare fully, in order to allow your child to have the best experience possible. This means following the teacher's practicing instructions and getting in consistent practicing.

WHAT DO I GET FOR THE RECITAL FEE?

Unlike many studios, we only charge a recital fee to those who participate. We do NOT charge ticket fees or entry fees. You and your guests attend free of charge. Some of the costs your recital fee helps to cover include: auditorium rental, setup and cleanup, sound system rental, paying a sound system technician, backstage helpers, programs, reception food, and other costs involved in the production of a recital. The recital fees we charge only offset the costs of the recital, they do not cover recital costs completely. Starlight Music Lessons covers the remaining recital costs.

PREPARATION TIPS: THINGS TO PRACTICE AT HOME

Having your child perform “pretend recitals” for you at home is a WONDERFUL way to help them prepare and understand what to expect at the show. Have them practice these steps in order:
  • From their assigned seat in the front row, walk up to the piano or mic, as appropriate. While they are walking, the teacher will be announcing their name and what they will be playing.
  • Place your music on the stand if you are using your music.
  • Sit down and place your fingers on the appropriate keys for the song. If you are a vocalist, this is the time you should start focusing on breathing.
  • Perform your piece just like you did in practice. If you make a mistake, don’t stop and start over. Just keep going and pretend it didn’t even happen. More than likely, the audience won’t even know!
  • When you finish, stand up, leaving your sheet music/book up on the stand. Do not bow with your sheet music in your hands.
  • Bow or curtsy. Look out at the audience and smile.
  • Get your sheet music/book and go back to your assigned performance seat.

Please review with your children that when they are in the audience, there is to be no talking and no running around. They are to sit quietly where asked.

IMPORTANT NOTES FOR THE RECITAL DAY

- Students need to be dressed up (a dress, skirt or very nice pants for the girls; nice pants and a nice shirt for the boys). No jeans or shorts please.
- Students MUST bring their assigned pieces with them so they can perform with the sheet music they are used to using. The teacher will NOT have extra copies of everyone’s music to use. Children should bring their sheet music/book EVEN if they have their piece memorized, just in case they want to take a peek before playing.
- If your child is using their printed music, please copy the pages they are using and mount them on white or black construction paper, or a manila folder. This will ensure that your child (who has worked very hard for this day) will receive all of the attention, not their neon-colored music book.
-You should arrive at the school 10-15 minutes early. However, please do not enter the building more than 15 minutes before your scheduled start time.
- It is appropriate for all families to stay for the entire recital unless you have an extreme emergency.

We look forward to seeing all of you at this year's show!
